Stanislaus County passes milestone in COVID-19 cases tied to skilled nursing facilities

Stanislaus County as of Monday ranks ninth in the state for reported COVID-19 cases among skilled nursing facility residents.

Local facilities have reported 517 cases to the California Department of Public Health, according to a state coronavirus dashboard, in addition to 343 of their health care workers testing positive. Stanislaus is the 16th most populous of the state’s 58 counties, but skilled nursing facilities in Santa Clara County, which ranks sixth, have reported about 120 fewer resident cases.

The state has only reported the deaths as fewer than 100 because of privacy issues for facilities tied to between one and 10 COVID-19-related fatalities. But 92 of the first 100 COVID-19 deaths in Stanislaus County were associated with a long-term care facility, Public Health Officer Dr. Julie Vaishampayan said at Board of Supervisors meeting last week. The total county death toll stood at 198 on Sunday and the Bee has requested further long-term care facility coronavirus data from the Health Services Agency.

Brandel Manor in Turlock is one of the latest facilities to publicly report a deadly outbreak, with 16 out of the 52 residents who tested positive dying of COVID-19. Thirty-three employees have also tested positive, according to an update posted on the nursing home’s website Friday.

When asked for comment, Public Relations Director Randy Eilts of the facility’s corporate owner Covenant Living directed the Bee to reference online updates. Safety protocols at Brandel Manor include isolating residents with COVID-19 symptoms, assigning the same nurses to all COVID-19 patients and daily health screenings for employees, according to the website.

Other facilities that have announced coronavirus-related deaths include Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Vintage Faire Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Modesto, which respectively reported 21 and six as of last week. Out of the 101 residents who tested positive at the Turlock nursing home since April, 75 have recovered.

The following 10 skilled nursing facilities have also reported between one and 10 COVID-19 deaths to the state:

  • Ceres PostAcute Care, where 26 residents and 12 workers have tested positive

  • Casa de Modesto Retirement Center, where less than 11 residents and 15 workers have tested positive

  • Central Valley Post Acute in Riverbank, where 44 residents and 28 workers have tested positive

  • Windsor Post-Acute Healthcare Center in Modesto, where 104 residents and 38 workers have tested positive

  • Modesto Post Acute Center, where 45 residents and 14 workers have tested positive

  • Main West PostAcute Care in Turlock, where 51 residents and less than 11 workers have tested positive

  • Hy-Lond Health Care Center in Modesto, where 41 residents and 27 workers have tested positive

  • Acacia Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Modesto, where 33 residents and 38 health care workers have tested positive

  • English Oaks Convalescent and Rehabilitation Hospital in Modesto, where less than 11 residents and 13 workers have tested positive

Another four facilities have reported between one and 10 COVID-19 cases among its residents and workers: San Luis Care Center in Newman, North Star PostAcute Care in Turlock, Garden City Healthcare Center in Modesto and Central Valley Post Acute in Modesto.

The state dashboard shows both Oakdale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and Covenant Village of Turlock reported less than 10 positive cases among their health care workers, while Crestwood Manor in Modesto reported 14 employees tested positive.
