Stanislaus County health inspectors saw rodent droppings in the pizza preparation area of a Turlock food facility during inspections in late July and early August.

The majority of the 2,400 permitted food service establishments in the county receive unannounced routine food safety inspections each year, according to the Department of Environmental Resources.

There were 44 inspections across 38 facilities between July 27-Aug. 2, according to the DER website.

Rodent droppings among major violations

The details of the reports do not indicate whether a restaurant passed or failed inspection. Corrective actions may have been made by the business by the time of publication.

Diana’s Bakery, 5465 Seventh St. in Keyes, had three violations during an inspection on July 28 that was the result of a complaint. The complaint alleged there was surface sewage in the bakery. Upon inspectors’ arrival, they found standing water in the driveway. The wastewater from the handwashing sink discharged to the floor sink, where it overflowed. At the mop sink, water was not draining properly. Water was run for one minute at the three-compartment sink and the floor sink started to overflow. The facility voluntarily closed.

State Foods Keyes, 5471 Seventh St. in Keyes, had no violations noted during an inspection on July 28 that was the result of a complaint alleging surfacing sewage in the facility. There was standing water in the front of the facility. On July 29, nine violations were found — three of them major. Several containers holding sauces were in the meat department’s walk-in refrigerator uncovered. Sausage and beef were hanging on storage racks in a refrigerator at 50 to 56 degrees.

The ambient temperature of this refrigerator was between 45 and 56 degrees. Bulk meats in the refrigerator were at 45 to 46 degrees. The refrigerator was lacking a freestanding thermometer. Several food boxes were on the floor in another refrigerator. A refrigeration unit in the back of the store was holding meat on a tray, uncovered. The food safety certification was expired.

Five violations remained during a reinspection on July 30.

Paletery Y Neveria La Monarca, 3100 Service Road, Suite 100, in Ceres, had two major violations on July 29. An open cup containing a creamy food product and spoon was on a counter. Mold was present on the surface of the product. An open tin can of chocolate coating was stored in a plastic bag.

Dutch Bros, 699 Golden State Blvd. in Turlock, had three violations on July 30 — two of them major. “Soft top” dairy product and strawberry diced fruit purée was left out at 46 degrees (must be 41 degrees minimum). Sanitizer buckets were empty. The floors were sticky and there wet spots throughout the food prep areas.

Sunrise Inn Food Plaza, 1350 Golden State Blvd. in Turlock, had 10 violations on July 31 — one of them major. Several sauce containers were expired, with dates from 2024 and 2025. Some of the expired sauces were open and not refrigerated despite the label stating, “refrigerate after opening.” There were rodent droppings in the pizza preparation area on a rolling cart storing a meat slicer and a pizza sauce dispenser. Additional rodent droppings were in the kitchen beneath the food prep counter. A container stored a white powder that the person in charge said was calcium food preservative. The item was not properly labeled.

A walk-in freezer was at 84 degrees. Another walk-in freezer was offline. An open-face freezer was a new addition to the facility without DER approval. A walk-in refrigerator had an ambient temperature of 44 degrees. Several soiled linens were scattered on counters, outside the sanitizer buckets. A food handler card was lacking one of the two employees.
