Modesto City Schools reverses course regarding pay for spring sports coaches
Originally, Modesto City Schools planned to pay the stipends of spring sports coaches based on how much of the season had been completed before the season was stopped due to the coronavirus.
The district reversed course on that decision on Thursday and announced spring sports coaches will be paid in full.
“As part of the many decisions to be made in the unprecedented situation caused by the pandemic and school closures, the District reviewed the payment of District stipends initially based on the premise of what work could reasonably be expected to continue during the period of school closures,” Mike Henderson, MCS Associate Superintendent of Human Resources, said in a statement.
“With spring seasons canceled upon school closure, it was initially determined to pay coaching stipends based on how much of the season had been completed. Upon further review of additional information from around the state as well as the investment of time coaches put into their teams, much of which occurs on the front end in preparation for the season, we made the decision to pay stipends in full for our spring sports coaches.”
The spring sports season started on Feb. 28 before the Stanislaus County suspended competition on March 13 due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season was later canceled on April 3 by the CIF.
Soderstrom moving up on MLB Draft boards: If the Major League Baseball Draft, scheduled for June 10-11, were to be predicted correctly by The Athletic’s Keith Law, Turlock might have a huge celebration.
In his first mock draft released on Wednesday, Law has the San Francisco Giants selecting Turlock High senior Tyler Soderstrom with the 13th overall pick.
It would be the second time the Giants will have drafted a Soderstrom in the first round; the team picked Tyler’s father, Steve, with the sixth overall pick in 1993.
MLB.com reporter Jim Callis also released his mock draft on Wednesday and he has the Cubs drafting Soderstrom at No. 16.
Soderstrom has signed with UCLA but could bypass college.
Here is what Callis wrote:
“The Cubs need pitching but have had much more success drafting and developing hitting, especially in the first round. The track record of high school catchers in the first round is lousy -- the last two to stay behind the plate and accrue even 5 WAR (Wins above replacement) are Joe Mauer (No. 1 overall in 2001) and Jason Kendall (No. 23 in 1992) -- but Soderstrom has a quality bat and the athleticism to profile at third base or on an outfield corner.”
