Notebook: Pitman girls, Turlock boys win CCAL titles; CV hires new football coach
In the last three years, Pitman girls soccer has come up just short of a league title, watching its rival, Turlock, claim three straight championships.
That all changed on Wednesday as the Pride beat the Bulldogs, 2-0, at Pitman High, to win the Central California Athletic League title, the school’s first league championship since 2015-16.
“It feels so nice,” Pride coach Annabel Perez said with a huge smile. “Since freshman year, these 11 seniors have come up short until now.”
After a disappointing 2-0 loss to Enochs on Monday, which snapped Pitman’s 11-game winning streak, Perez said the Pride (9-1, 17-5-1) regrouped and focused on Turlock (8-2, 14-5-2) during Tuesday’s practice.
“I think they started tasting victory too soon,” Perez said about the teams’ performance against the Eagles.
The first 20 minutes of the rivalry game was scoreless until sophomore Camila Stephens gave the Pride a 1-0 lead after she lobbed a shot from 30 yards away in the 22nd minute.
Pitman continued to pressure on offense and maintained the 1-0 lead until sophomore Isabella Green scored on a header off a rebound to give Pitman a 2-0 lead in the 61st minute.
Perez said Green had been sick and she was subbed out a few times to regain her stamina.
“She worked hard since the get go and always stayed after practice (for extra work),” Perez said.
The schools will find out their playoff fates when brackets are released on Friday afternoon.
Turlock boys soccer team wins CCAL: In the CCAL boys soccer championship at Joe Debely Stadium, Turlock beat Pitman, 2-1.
It was the Bulldogs’ fourth straight league championship although Pitman and Turlock shared the title last year.
Senior Sean Silva scored both goals for the Bulldogs (9-0-1, 19-3-1), who advanced to the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I Championship last year.
The loss snapped a 10-game unbeaten streak for the Pride (8-1-1, 12-7-1).
Pride girls basketball team wins league title: Pitman (9-1, 22-6), the Bee’s No. 1 ranked girls basketball team all year, captured the CCAL title with 47-33 victory over Turlock on Wednesday.
Turlock (8-2, 14-13) had won three straight league titles.
Central Valley announces new football coach: The only remaining open head football coach position in the Stanislaus District has been filled.
Central Valley announced Derrick Goblirsch as the school’s new coach, Hawks Athletic Director Greg Magni said Wednesday.
Goblirsch takes over for Scott Edwards, who resigned last December after six seasons.
Goblirsch has taught at Central Valley since 2011 and is the school’s varsity baseball coach. He also was the JV head football coach and was on the varsity staff for the last nine years.
Modesto Christian was the other Stanislaus District school to have an opening and the Crusaders hired Jerry Grimshaw in early January.
There were six openings in the area after the 2018 season.
