GoFundMe launched for man killed in I-5 crash near Newman
A fundraising campaign has been launched for a Southern California man who was killed last month in a crash on Interstate 5 near Newman, according to a GoFundMe page created by family members.
Emilio Quiroga, 30, of Van Nuys, died in the single-vehicle crash April 25, the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office previously confirmed.
The crash was reported around 10:40 a.m. on northbound I-5, north of Stuhr Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Quiroga was driving a 2004 Ford SUV when, for unknown reasons, he made a left turn, causing the vehicle to overturn into the center divide, CHP Officer Aaron Fay said.
The SUV came to rest on its roof on the southbound shoulder. Quiroga was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger, identified by authorities as his sister, Angela Quiroga, 32, of Van Nuys, suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital by helicopter. Authorities have said both occupants were wearing seat belts.
As of the latest update from CHP on Tuesday, no further details about the cause of the crash have been released.
Fundraiser details
According to the GoFundMe page, the Quiroga family has faced multiple tragedies over the past year.
The page says the family recently traveled to Bolivia to mark the first anniversary of their father’s burial and finalize paperwork following his death.
About a month after returning, Emilio was driving his sister home from the Bay Area after she graduated from Cal State East Bay when the crash occurred.
Angela Quiroga was initially hospitalized in critical condition but has since been released from critical care and faces a long recovery, according to the page.
The fundraiser says the family is now dealing with funeral costs, medical expenses, travel and ongoing support needs.
