A man was killed and a woman seriously injured in a single-vehicle crash Saturday on I-5 north of Stuhr Road near Newman, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A 44-year-old man was driving north when, for unknown reasons, he made a left turn, causing his 2004 Ford SUV to overturn into the center divide, Modesto CHP Officer Aaron Fay said. It was not known how fast the vehicle was going, or what lane it was in.

The SUV came to rest on its roof on the southbound I-5 shoulder, Fay said. The unidentified driver, from Van Nuys, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger, Angela Quiroga, 32, also from Van Nuys, was taken to a hospital by helicopter with major injuries, Fay said.

The incident was reported at approximately 10:40 a.m.

“CHP is on scene investigating a solo vehicle fatal crash,” according to a post on the Modesto CHP Facebook page. “Traffic on both northbound and southbound I-5 in the area is affected. Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes.”

Traffic remains slow both northbound and southbound in the area, Fay said.

A previous CHP Facebook post indicated a big rig was stuck on I-5 northbound in the same area; however, Fay said the big rig incident happened earlier and was unrelated to the fatal crash.

Fay said both occupants in the Ford SUV were wearing seat belts.
