A man killed in a crash Saturday on Interstate 5 near Newman has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Emilio Quiroga, 30, of Van Nuys, died in the single-vehicle crash, authorities said.

It was reported around 10:40 a.m. Saturday on northbound I-5 north of Stuhr Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Quiroga was driving a 2004 Ford SUV northbound when, for unknown reasons, he made a left turn, causing the vehicle to overturn into the center divide, CHP Officer Aaron Fay said.

The SUV came to rest on its roof on the southbound shoulder. Quiroga was pronounced dead at the scene, Fay said.

A passenger, 32-year-old Angela Quiroga of Van Nuys, suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital by helicopter.

Both occupants were wearing seat belts, according to the CHP.

As of Monday afternoon, there were no updates in the investigation.
