A pedestrian suffered fatal injuries after being hit by a vehicle in downtown Modesto Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on I Street between Seventh and Eighth streets at about 5:44 a.m., said Modesto Police Lt. Jason Grogan. Conditions were still dark at that time, as it was roughly 90 minutes before sunrise.

He said the pedestrian, an adult male, was hit by a westbound SUV and became trapped underneath it.

After being freed by firefighters, the man was taken to a hospital, where he later died. His name has not yet been released.

The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk, said Sgt. Pat Kimes.

He said the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators.
