City, county reopen Tenth Street Place after restricting public to stop coronavirus

Modesto and Stanislaus County reopened Tenth Street Place — the city-county administration center in downtown — to the public Monday but ask residents to only go there if they cannot take care of their business online or by phone.

The city and county closed the building to the public about two months ago as part of limiting the spread of the new coronavirus.

Officials are encouraging people to wear face masks and a limited number will be available for people who don’t have them. But the city and county are not requiring masks.

“Our guidelines are consistent with the standards provided by the State of California and our local public health department,” county spokeswoman Amy Vickery said in an email to The Bee.

The city and county ask Tenth Street Place visitors to keep six feet apart and practice good hygiene as well as other precautions.

“As we continue to operate amid the COVID-19 virus, the health and well-being of our customers and employees is our number one priority,” states a county news release. “When coming to Tenth Street Place, the public is asked to adhere to the CDC guidelines for proper distancing and hygiene, and stay home if they are experiencing any flu-like symptoms.“

Modesto asks residents to call the city at 209-577-5200 or visit the city’s website, modestogov.com, to learn what city business they can conduct without going to Tenth Street Place. That includes paying a utilities bill and parking citation and starting or stopping city utilities services.

Stanislaus County’s website, stancounty.com, has information on county business that can be conducted online and links to county departments as well as their phone numbers.
