Best sandwich in California? This deli ranks No. 1 in the state, Yelp says

One California deli has been recognized by Yelp as the best place to grab a sandwich — and it’s not the first time.
Prunedale Market & Deli is nestled in a rural community off U.S. Route 101, south of San Francisco.
It’s run by owner Martin Muñoz, who smokes and sells his famous barbecue tri-tip sandwich, according to SFGATE.
That sandwich helped put him on Yelp’s radar in 2022 for the best sandwich in California.
Reviewers are still raving about it in 2024 as Yelp released the “Best Sandwiches in Every State” on Aug. 7, and Prunedale Market & Deli was on the list again.
“The famous tri tip sandwich is handcrafted by Martin, thinly sliced and with nice deep smoke,” one reviewer wrote. “The sauce goes surprisingly well with the tri tip and the spicy Fritos lol!”
“The bread is huge and so soft. Loaded with thin sliced tri tip, bbq sauce, mayo, hot corn chips, lettuce and tomatoe,” another person wrote.
Although the cash-only market has a small menu with only one sandwich, customers keep coming back for it.
Guests can also order soup, like corn chowder, or smoked barbecue ribs and a whole tri-tip.
Muñoz’s welcoming spirit and generosity is another thing reviewers keep bringing up.
“He has a heart of gold and you can tell that love is a key ingredient in his food,” a Yelp reviewer said. “We have come time and time again and we’re never disappointed.”
To find the best sandwiches in every state, Yelp identified businesses in the sandwich category that had a large number of reviews that mentioned “sandwiches.”
The website “then ranked those spots using a number of factors, including geographic location and the volume and ratings of reviews mentioning the keyword.”
Prunedale is about a 100-mile drive south from San Francisco.
