Cora served diners in Modesto’s Roseburg Square for over a year. Now, it’s closing
Just over a year ago, Cora at Roseburg Square served its first diners in Modesto. Sunday, it will serve its last.
Owners George Bertaina and Alicia Zabala announced the closure on Instagram on Wednesday afternoon, saying “the time has come for us to close our doors.”
“We have so much gratitude for your patronage and love and we will keep in touch about any endeavors that lie ahead,” they wrote. “We will be providing catering and personal chef services and can be reached by email at info@cora.restaurant.”
Bertaina and Zabala bought The Divine Swine in October 2023 and rebranded it in response to residents’ desire for a change. It reopened after renovations at the end of May 2024.
The restaurant is named after Bertaina’s grandmother, Paulina Corazon Delavaca-Ramirez, who was nicknamed Cora.
“We had a really large family, so there was always conflicting personalities, but she was always successful at bringing everybody together at the dinner table,” Bertaina told The Modesto Bee in an April 2024 interview.
At the restaurant’s grand opening, Bertaina said he hoped to accomplish the same for the community at his restaurant.
Cora’s menu features items that represent Bertaina’s and Zabala’s “huge blended family,” they said. Dishes have Spanish, Filipino, Italian, Swedish and Portuguese influences.
For its last week, Cora will be open Wednesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“Stay tuned for info about the business that will be taking our spot in Roseburg Square,” Bertaina and Zabala wrote.
