Eco-friendly store closing in Modesto. Owner cites ‘economic downturn’ as cause
Ecosource Refillery, Modesto’s only refill bar and zero-waste shop, has announced it will close in late October.
The store in the Frontier West shopping center on Standiford Avenue has been open since July 2023. It will close Oct. 30.
“Due to the current economic downturn and the reality that many households are tightening their budgets, we are no longer able to sustain the store,” Ecosource Refillery owners Erin and Daniel Sperry wrote on Facebook.
New inventory will not be coming in to the store, and current products are available at a 25% discount. Furniture, fixtures, decor and the store’s point-of-sale system are also for sale.
The store is no longer accepting TerraCycle items, used batteries or donation jars, the Sperrys said. Gift cards will not be sold and new rewards cards as well as stamps on rewards cards will not be issued. Gift cards that have already been sold and full rewards cards will be honored.
“We’ve been honored to be a part of your journey toward more sustainable living, and we are thankful to each of you for allowing us to be part of your daily lives,” the Sperrys wrote.
Ecosource Refllery sells sustainable, nontoxic and eco-friendly products including personal care, home care and accessories.
Products include shampoo and conditioner, body lotion, sunblock, bug spray, laundry detergent, cleaning products, toothpaste tablets and much more. Accessories include reusable straws, linen coffee filters, bags and “un-paper” towels.
Customers can purchase a container from the store (between $2 and $10) or bring their own. Products are priced by the ounce.
“Anything works,” Erin Sperry told The Modesto Bee in June 2024. “You can bring in your shampoo bottle, you can bring in an empty, clean but used spaghetti sauce jar.”
