Sacramento police held a press conference Sunday afternoon announcing that they have not identified suspects in the downtown shooting that killed six people and injured at lease 12 others.
The shooting unfolded on a busy night on the 1000 block of K Street, a strip packed with bars and nightclubs near the Golden 1 Center.
Police Chief Kathy Lester indicated that there may have been multiple gunmen who shot people outside of the nightclub, but did not provide additional details. Lester confirmed a stolen handgun was found at the scene.
She identified the victims as three men and three women.
“The scale of violence that just happened in our city is unprecedented in my 27 years here,” she said.
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg added that the city plans to increase lighting and cameras in the downtown area. He called for more resources to address youth violence.
Police did not identify the suspects as youth, however.
“We can never accept that this is normal, and we never will,” Steinberg said, answering questions as to why activities including the Sacramento Kings game were taking place.
“We don’t want to shut down, that would be the wrong response,” he said.
It was not immediately clear if the victims were targeted, or how many shooters were involved.
Police tweeted that there was a filmed altercation before the shooting, and asked community members to submit related videos to the police department.
An information center has also been set up at City Hall, 10th and I streets, for relatives.
