Modesto church will hold drive-in services this weekend
Shelter Cove Community Church has decided to host drive-in services at its campus this weekend.
The move comes after Stanislaus County released an amended health order Wednesday lifting some restrictions on certain types of activities.
Supervisor Kristin Olsen had posted Monday evening on her Facebook page the possibility of opening “outdoor activities, automated car washes and ‘drive-in’ church services...”
Executive Pastor Ed Kelley said in an email Wednesday afternoon that Shelter Cove will hold the drive-in services Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, at 10 a.m.
They will have two 16-by-9-foot-video walls set up in a parking lot and will use an FM transmitter for radio volume, he said.
He said they’ll continue to offer their services online, as well.
“We’re only doing this for the short term, since MANY people are clamoring for ANY kind of social interaction. We WILL be keeping the 6 feet protocols and whatever other guidelines the county gives but it’s definitely a go for us,” Kelley said in the email.
When interviewed for a story earlier this week, Kelley said there could be logistical issues for a church as large as Shelter Cove to hold drive-in gatherings, but added that church officials would meet to discuss the possibility.
A press release from the church noted it’s been five weeks since services were held on the campus.
“Shelter Cove would love this to be a time of worshiping the Lord and praising Him for this opportunity to gather,” the press release said, “as well as being reminded that church isn’t about the building, it’s about the people.”
