MONDAY’S LATEST: UPDATES ON THE SHOOTING THAT LEFT 6 KILLED
Six people are dead and 12 more were injured in a downtown Sacramento shooting early Sunday morning.
Where did the shooting happen?
The shooting took place in downtown Sacramento near the 1000 block of K Street, but details about where the incident occurred have not been confirmed.
Officers responded to the scene, across an eight-block area, with broken glass and police markers on 10th Street from K to L, early Sunday morning. Police were also investigating at 12th and K streets.
Clubs, bars, restaurants and other establishments surround the neighborhood. It’s a few blocks away from the Golden 1 Center. The California State Capitol and Capitol Park are just a few blocks southeast of the shooting.
Several clubs and music venues operate in the area, including London Sacramento at 1009 10th St., which bills itself as a “multi-level boutique nightclub & ultra lounge” on its website. At least two of the victims had gone to London the night of the shooting.
“We at London Sacramento are praying for the families of the victims that were impacted by the incident that occurred near 10th & K streets,” the nightclub said in a statement on Instagram. “While this incident occurred a block away, we will continue to make ourselves available to the Sacramento Police Department and provide any information we can during their investigation.
“Our prayers are with the affected families and we continue to grieve with the Sacramento community.”
When did the shooting occur?
The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday, April 3.
What do we know about the victims?
Six people died and 12 more were injured.
Three of the victims killed were men, three were women.
Of those reportedly killed is Sergio Harris, 38, who had gone to the London nightclub Saturday night. His mother Pamela Harris and wife Leticia Harris were taken behind the police tape on 9 and K streets by a law enforcement officer. Sacramento activist Stevante Clark confirmed to The Sacramento Bee that Leticia’s husband had died.
DeVazia Turner, 29, was also one of the six killed in the shooting, according to family. His father, Frank Turner, said his son was a regular at London. He expressed frustration that he wasn’t able to get additional information from police.
Sacramento police and the Coroner’s Office have not released the names of any of the victims.
What do we know about the suspects?
APRIL 4 UPDATE: FIRST SUSPECT ARRESTED IN CONNECTION WITH SHOOTING
Police Chief Kathy Lester, speaking with reporters Sunday afternoon, said the shooting followed a fight. Officers recovered a stolen handgun at the scene, she said, and “we have confirmed there were multiple shooters.”
She said there were no suspects in custody as of Sunday afternoon and stressed that the investigation was at its earliest stage. She said police cameras in the vicinity were able to “capture portions of the shootings.”
Street closures
Police closed L, K and J streets between 9 and 13th streets for the investigation.
Residents were asked to avoid the area near 10th and K streets, which is packed with restaurants and bars that leads to the Golden 1 Center. The Blue Line light-rail system is operating a bus bridge between Globe and 13th Street Station, a spokeswoman for Sacramento Regional Transit said. The line is operating normally otherwise, said Devra Selenis, a spokeswoman for RT.
Scheduled events
A Sacramento Runners Association race, a Broadway Sacramento presentation of “Wicked” and the Sacramento Kings versus Golden State warriors game are all scheduled for Sunday and are proceeding.
A team spokesman said the Kings will play the Golden State Warriors as scheduled at 6 p.m. Fans attending the game could encounter road closures and a heavy police presence as investigators continue to process a large crime scene that covered a two-by-four-block area around 10th and K streets, three blocks east of the arena.
What is the community saying?
Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg tweeted at 6:29 a.m. Sunday:

Our new Police Chief, Kathy Lester, has made it a top priority, and I stand firmly behind her.”

The Sacramento Kings also released a statement Sunday morning. They are scheduled to play the Golden State Warriors at Golden 1 Center on Sunday.
“Our community grieves as we mourn those lost today senselessly killed by gun violence,” read the statement. “Our prayers are with those who have been wounded and heart goes out to all the families in anguish affected by this devastating act.”
