Notebook: Downey releases football schedule; Ceres native makes MLS debut
The Downey football team will play a familiar foe in early September.
The Knights recently released their schedule for the upcoming season and will play former Modesto Metro Conference member Beyer on Sept. 11.
The last time the two teams met, Downey won, 40-28, on Oct. 6, 2017.
The Knights were 7-4 (4-1 in Central California Athletic League) in 2019 and lost to Granite Bay in the first round of the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs.

Ceres native makes MLS debut: Sixteen-year-old Ceres native Cade Cowell made his Major League Soccer debut in the San Jose Earthquakes’ 5-2 loss to the Minnesota United on Mar. 7.
Cowell, who signed with the Earthquakes on Jan. 23, 2019 and at the time was the fourth youngest signee in MLS history, had two shot attempts in the loss.
Modesto Nuts announce promotional schedule: With a little over a month until Opening Day, the Modesto Nuts released their promotional schedule on Monday for the 2020 season.
On Opening Day against the Lancaster JetHawks on Apr. 17 at 7:05 p.m., the first 500 fans will received King Felix bobbleheads in honor of former Seattle Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez.
Hernandez, who signed a minor league deal with the Atlanta Braves in the offseason, threw two innings for the Nuts last August in a rehab appearance.
The Nuts will have 17 firework shows throughout the season.
