Notebook: Stanislaus District shines Week 1; local talent earns big accomplishments
Quarterbacks dominated Stanislaus District football on Friday. Big games from three Modesto-area quarterbacks were good enough to land them in the top 25 among Sac-Joaquin Section QBs in Week 1, according to MaxPreps. Here were the numbers:
- Eli McCabe (Modesto) – 19-23, 231 yards, 5 TDs, 0 INT
- Cruz Marines (Gregori) – 10-16, 168 yards passing, 1 pass TD, 69 yards rushing, 1 rush TD

Waterford Starting QB Injury Update: On the first play of the second half, Waterford quarterback Aaron Adams suffered a mid-ankle sprain. Head coach Adam Hilton said there were no breaks or fractures and he is expecting him to play on Friday.
In Adams’ absence, junior backup Caleb Hilton led the team on three straight scoring drives.
Waterford won the game 44-14.
Penalized Teams Have Appealed: Section Commissioner Mike Garrison said the Ripon Christian High football team has appealed the Sac-Joaquin Section’s ruling that came down for its involvement in a club league last winter.
Garrison added that the other three teams – Stone Ridge Christian of Merced, Capital Christian of Sacramento and Vacaville Christian – have appealed as well.
New Disciplinary Across All Sports: Sections across the state will be enforcing harsher discipline for unsportsmanlike penalties. If an ejection comes for reasons other than fighting, the player will be removed from that game and suspended for the next. A second violation yields a three-game suspension and a third ends a player’s season.
If a player is ejected for fighting or physical assault, first offenses will result in missing the remainder of that game as well as three to six games; the second time that player is done for the season.
Entering the field or court from the sidelines is treated as a fighting offense, three-to-six game suspension.
Volleyball Foundation Games set for Aug. 30: Foundation games are a great way for local teams to play an extra game without it affecting their record while donating to a good cause. Money that is taken at the door doesn’t go to each individual school; instead it is donated to the CIF Scholarship fund that helps financially support some student athletes.
A total of 51 foundation games will be played on the “foundation date”, including matchups like Oakdale at Turlock and Pitman at Hilmar.
Ceres Native Selected to 2021 MLS All-Star Game: Cade Cowell is just 17 years old and on Wednesday, the San Jose Earthquakes midfielder will compete with Portuguese soccer legend Nani in the 2021 MLS All-Star Game.
Cowell is in his third professional season and earned the All-Star nod after he became the first player to tally four goals and four assists in 2021.
He is also the third-youngest player to be named player of the week after he received the award for his play in Week 3.
Modesto Christian Boys’ Basketball Class of 2024: Cal-Hi Sports recently put out its class of 2024 top 25 and it is lined with Modesto Christian players. No. 2-ranked Jamari Phillips leads the talented Modesto Christian class after averaging 18 points, 4 rebounds per game and shooting 40 percent from three-point range last season.
Standing 6-foot-6, Manasse Itete is ranked 13 and 6-foot-2 shooting guard Ty Virgil holds the No. 24 spot in the class.
The Crusaders finished last season 15-0 overall and 6-0 in league.

JCGridiron’s preseason national rankings came out recently and had the Pirates listed at No. 11. The coaching staff credits the teams in the past for setting the standard and getting the program recognition and says this year’s team is working to uphold the expectations.
