Notebook: Multiple records broken at Stanislaus County meet; MC game called off

Four meet records were broken at the 2021 Stanislaus County Track and Field Championships on May 7 at Hughson High.

The highlighted race was the boys 1600 meters, where six athletes were within 10 seconds of the previous meet record with both junior Damian Garcia (Pitman HS) and sophomore Caleb Cavanagh (Oakdale HS) dipping under the mark with Garcia winning in a time of 4 minutes, 23:81 seconds while Cavanagh finished in 4:24:37.

In the girls mile, junior Haliegh Humble (Oakdale HS) broke the 16-year-old meet record in a time of 5:09.39, eclipsing the previous mark held by Riverbank High legend Maritza Garcia.

Pitman won the boys team title and was led by sophomore Joey Stout and freshman Blayne Siebert, who both scored in multiple events. The Oakdale won the girls team title and were paced by seniors Kylie Nunes (sprints and triple jump), Emma Harper (discus and shot put), and Jessica Jerichoff (discus and shot put).

Other notable results were:

  • Cavanagh winning the 3200-meter race with the Mustangs going 1-2-3 on the podium.
  • Gregori junior Paul Kamoe winning the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay.
  • Turlock junior Kylee Redman winning the girls 100-meter dash with a time of 12.45, a new meet record. She also anchored the winning 4x100 relay.

There are two big dual meets left in the season, including Pitman hosting Oakdale on Wednesday and the Bulldogs welcoming the Pride to Joe Debely Stadium on May 19.

Modesto Christian marquee basketball game called off: The Modesto Christian boys basketball team was scheduled to travel to Chatsworth on May 8 to play national-power Sierra Canyon in one of the state’s top matchups.

Unfortunately, that game was canceled due to scheduling issues at Sierra Canyon.

The Crusaders (8-0) hosted St. Mary’s (6-1) on Wednesday night.

Former Modesto Christian basketball player signs with North Dakota: Former Crusader Tsotne Tsartsidze signed with the University of North Dakota last week.

Tsartsidze began his college career at Howard Junior College in Texas before transferring to the College of Southern Idaho, where he averaged 7.3 points per game and 5.7 rebounds during the 2020-21 season.

At Modesto Christian, Tsartsidze averaged 11 points, seven rebounds, and 2.5 blocks as a senior.

Tyler Soderstrom starts off MiLB career strong: After a double in his first professional at-bat, Turlock High alum and Stockton Ports catcher Tyler Soderstrom leads the team with eight hits and has a .308 batting average after the seven-game series against the Modesto Nuts.

The Nuts are 4-3 after beginning a two-week road trip against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday.

Soderstrom appeared in all seven games and the Ports (2-5) began a six-game series with a loss at home against the San Jose Giants on Tuesday.

Local soccer team to begin season on Saturday: Academica Soccer Club, a men’s professional team located in Turlock, opens the National Premier Soccer League on Saturday at home against FC Davis at 7 p.m.

Admission is free and the team plays their home games at Academica Field located at 1343 West Greenway Ave.

Oakdale alum finishes regular season tops in Pac-12 categories: Arizona State senior catcher Maddi Hackbarth (Oakdale HS) finished the regular season as the Pac-12’s leader in home runs (20) and RBIs (58).

She tied the school’s single-season home run record, finishing third in the nation. She was sixth in RBIs.

Senior Nicole “Sis” Bates (Ceres) had a .401 batting average for the Washington Huskies, who are ranked fifth in the country in the latest rankings. ASU is 12th.

The NCAA will release the tournament bracket on May 16 and the it begins on May 21.

MJC track and field athletes lead state: After the College of San Mateo Last Chance Invitational on May 8, the Modesto Junior College track and field team has multiple state leaders.

Freshman Jessica Pedretti (Modesto HS) leads in the discus, No. 2 in the nation and moved to ninth on the school’s all-time list with a throw of 41.85 meters, or just over 137 feet last Saturday.

Sophomore Jadyn Snaer (East Union HS) leads the state in the 100- and 200-meter.

Sophomores Alyssa Evans (Kimball, 100 hurdles), Rhiannon Genilla (Manteca, javelin throw), Talyn Steffens (Kimball, 400 hurdles) and freshman Jackson Allen (Turlock, 400 hurdles) are all second in the state in their respective events.

The Pirates host the MJC Invitational on Friday at 11 a.m.
