Notebook: Beau Green transfers to SoCal powerhouse; Pitman‘s Sanchez commits to OSU
Quarterback Beau Green has left Turlock High and enrolled at Mater Dei in Santa Ana.
The Orange County Register reported on Sept. 11 that the junior transferred to the SoCal powerhouse and would begin distance learning this week with the school planning to return to in-person classes on Sept. 22.
Rumors began in late August that Green, who has a scholarship offer from Auburn, according to 247sports, had left the Bulldogs. Turlock coach James Peterson confirmed late last month via text the 6-foot-2 Green had departed.
Green’s transfer to Mater Dei is the fourth high school he’s enrolled in since he captured the eyes of area football fans during a successful, yet injury-shortened freshman year on the Downey High varsity team. If he plays at the private Catholic school known for its athletic accomplishments when the season begins in January, he would be taking snaps for only the second time with a team.
Green started his career at Downey and completed 65 of 105 passes for 1,021 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions in five games before injuring his throwing shoulder. Headed for a sophomore season quarterback competition with Bryce Gouker, the strong-armed Green left the school mid-year and enrolled at Modesto Christian, where his father, Ryan Green, was named head coach in January 2019
In a stunning move four months later, Ryan Green stepped down before ever coaching a game. Meanwhile, Beau Green moved on to Turlock, where his family lives. He didn’t play during his sophomore year after having offseason shoulder surgery.
Mater Dei was in the quarterback “transfer” market after Bryce Young, the 2019 Gatorade California Football Player of the Year, graduated. He is now at Alabama.
Senior Miller Moss transferred from Alemany in Mission Hills to Mater Dei in June but the USC commit is no longer enrolled according to the Register. He is reportedly expected to enroll in USC in January.
Mater Dei competes in the Trinity League, regarded as one of the best high school leagues in the country.
Among the quarterbacks from the school who have gone on to major colleges and the NFL are Matt Barkley and Matt Leinert.
Pitman junior commits to Oregon State: Pitman junior goalie Mya Sanchez recently committed to Oregon State.
Sanchez, the Bee’s 2020 Girls Soccer Player of the Year, had over 15 NCAA Division I offers, according to her father, Phillip Sanchez.
She had 11 shutouts and averaged 6.4 saves a game in 2020 and is a two-time Central California Athletic League First Team honoree.
She is also a two-time Pitman Scholar Athlete of the Year.
