Notebook: Stanislaus County suspends all sports conditioning until further notice
After allowing conditioning practices for nearly a month, Stanislaus County suspended all high school athletics until further notice due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The Stanislaus County Office of Education and state also announced last week that students will not return to campuses for in-person learning in early August.
The CIF will announce the status of the fall sports season on July 20. The fall sports season is scheduled to begin on Aug. 21 but the start will likely be postponed.
Two longtime area coaches pass away: Bill Evans, who spent nearly 40 years coaching college, high school, and travel softball, passed away on June 30 at the age of 63.
Evans was a longtime coach at Ceres High and also co-owned a softball academy with Jimmy Dyson.
“I’ve known him (Bill) for as long as I’ve been coaching,” Ceres High softball coach Mike Corsaut said in an interview with the Ceres Courier. “He was an amazing man. He was always more than willing to give advice. He was so knowledgeable. He had a huge impact on the softball community. We’re going to establish a Bill Evans Memorial Scholarship next year. We’re planning on naming our softball tournament after him.”
Bill Stricker, a member of the original Portland Trail Blazers in 1970 who spent 32 years at the East Union boys basketball coach and had over 350 career wins, passed away on July 3 at the age of 72, the Manteca Bulletin reported.
Stricker compiled a 367-277 record as boys basketball coach and spent 32 years with East Union.
The school named the basketball court after him in 2017.
