Notebook: Modesto City Schools to allow high school sports workouts on Monday

Modesto City Schools, a district with seven high schools, will allow high school athletics to begin summer conditioning workouts on Monday, MCS spokeswoman Becky Fortuna confirmed Thursday morning.

MCS is the largest school district in the area.

Big Valley Christian and Central Catholic began football workouts on Monday and Denair, Hughson, Oakdale, Modesto Christian, and the Turlock Unified School District, which includes Turlock and Pitman high schools, will start next week.

Other sports are also expected to begin their summer workouts in addition to fall sports.

Johansen will have a new football coach in 2020: Scott Sacuskie, who spent the last five years as head coach of the Johansen High football team, stepped down in January.

The Vikings went 7-3 in 2019, their best record since 2008.

Sacuskie said he stepped down to assist with his Pop Warner team, the Central Valley Outlaws.

He will remain at Johansen as the school’s athletic director and physical education teacher.

Rod Smith Sr., who was the team’s defensive coordinator last year, is the new head coach.

Longtime Stanislaus State supporter passes away: Benjamin Edward “Ed” Fitzpatrick, Jr., who served as a member of the Stanislaus State Foundation Board from 2003 to 2014 and funded numerous scholarships, passed away at the age of 78 on May 29.

The school’s arena, the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena, was named in his and his wife’s honor in 2009.

“Ed was one of the first donors I spoke with when I arrived at Stan State in July 2016,” Stan State President Ellen Junn said in a press release. “It was on my very first day — he was on my list of phone calls to make to get to know the University’s transformational donors. Upon speaking with him that first day, and throughout the time I was privileged to know him, I was moved by his warmth and impressed by his business acumen. Not only did he change the face of his industry, he also changed the face of our University. I am deeply grateful to have the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena at Stan State and to have his son, Ryan, continuing in his father’s legacy as a member of our Foundation Board.”
