CIF State Roundup: Four local boys hoops team fall in first round, Hughson girls win
After nearly two weeks off, the Modesto Christian boys basketball team fell behind early and saw its season end in an 82-51 loss to Archbishop Riordan in the first round of the CIF State Division I playoffs on Tuesday.
“We shot bad and didn’t come out with that fight,” Crusaders coach Brice Fantazia said.
No. 16 seed Modesto Christian (20-11) lost to Rocklin in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinals on Feb. 21 and hadn’t played since until they faced No. 1 Archbishop Riordan (22-5).
The host Crusaders jumped out to a 18-9 lead after the first quarter and led 37-23 at halftime.
Senior guard Michael Pearson had 13 points and went over the 1,500 career mark. Pearson has the fourth most career points in school history. Junior guard Jaden Phillips added 13.

Sequoia 67, Sonora 57: The CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion Wildcats (28-4) were upset by the Ravens (18-11).
Pleasant Valley 58, Central Catholic 55: The Raiders (24-9) fell on the road in Chico. Senior guard Dayton Magana had 18 points and junior Arvind Sandhu had 11 for Central Catholic.

Pacific Bay Christian 47, Denair 44: The Coyotes (26-4) kept it close all game but saw their season end. Senior Diego Sotto had 17 points and senior Dwight Bumgarner added 16 for the Eagles (28-3).

Div. V
Hughson 58, Wheatland 48: The Huskies (21-9) picked up the victory on the road over the Pirates (17-10). Hughson is at Branson on Thursday.

Boys
Sanger 1 (8), Central Valley 1 (7): Central Valley lost on penalty kicks for the second game in a row. Junior Leo Giovanni Ayala had a goal for Hawks (20-5-3) in the 69th minute.
Hilmar 2 (4), Lowell 2 (1) : The Yellowjackets (17-6) advanced to the second round on penalty kicks. Hilmar is at Anderson on Thursday at 4 p.m.
Girls
Kingsburg 2, Ripon 0: The Indians (20-6-1) saw their season end in the first round of the Div. IV playoffs.
All-Area Basketball All-Star Game: Nominations for the 25th Annual Six-County Boys and Girls All-Star Game are due by March 15.
A selection committee will determine the 24 players and four coaches for the event, which is May 8 at Modesto Junior College.
