MC boys hoops receives at-large berth to state playoffs. Who else made it?

Despite falling in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division I quarterfinals, the Modesto Christian’s boys basketball team was awarded an at-large berth by the section to the CIF State playoffs.

Those brackets were released Sunday evening and the Crusaders are the No. 16 seed in Division I and will face No. 1 Archbishop Riordan on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Tuesday is the first round for Div. I-V while the Open Division and Div. VI begin the next day.

It will be a rematch of a Dec. 21 contest, which Archbishop Riordan won, 55-41. Modesto Christian advanced to the NorCal Open Division title last year where they lost to Sheldon.

Five other Stanislaus District teams made the state playoffs.

Sonora, which beat Liberty Ranch in the SJS Div. IV title game, is the No. 3 seed in Div. III and will host No. 14 Sequoia. Central Catholic is the No. 9 seed and will travel to Chico to face Pleasant Valley.

Denair is the No. 10 seed in Div. V and the Coyotes are at No. 7 Pacific Bay Christian.

Ripon Christian, which beat Stockton Christian in the SJS Div. V championship, is the No. 2 seed in the NorCal Div. VI and will host the California School for the Deaf on Wednesday.

Hughson is the lone area girls team to make the state playoffs and the Huskies are in Div. V and at No. 7 Wheatland.

The NorCal Div. VI Championship is on March 10 while the state championships for the other divisions are March 13 and 14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

The section also released its NorCal and SoCal soccer championship brackets and three local teams were chosen.

After losing to Bella Vista in the Div. II Championship, the Central Valley boys will travel south to face Sanger in the D2 bracket on Tuesday.

Ripon girls are at Kingsburg in Div. IV and Hilmar boys hosts Lowell in Div. V.

Hilmar’s game starts at 3 p.m. and while the other two games start at 4 p.m. The second round is Thursday and the title games are Saturday at host sites.
