Roundup: Johansen boys soccer falls to Wood; MC girls hoops victorious at Grant

In its CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoff opener against Wood, the Johansen boys soccer team struggled to maximize its opportunities and saw its season end in a 1-0 defeat.

“We failed to capitalize and finish on four golden opportunities to put them away early tonight,” Vikings coach Ryan White said. “We allowed them to hang in there and they scored on a mistake in our back end (in the second half).”

Johansen (17-3-2) senior Diego Gutierrez ended his senior season with 43 goals.

Division I

Turlock 4, Armijo 0: The Bulldogs (18-3-3) won their eighth straight game and have outscored opponents, 37-5, during the streak. Seniors Luke Redman and Omar Rodriguez and juniors Sammy Galdamez and Salvandor Plancarte all had goals for the Bulldogs.

Gregori 1 (9), Cosumnes Oaks 1 (8): The Jaguars (14-5-1) advanced to the second round of the playoffs on penalty kicks. Junior Tyler Kriese had a goal for Gregori.

Div. II

Central Valley 1, Lincoln-Lincoln 0: The Hawks (18-3-3) advanced as senior Isaac Juarez scored the game-winning goal in the first two minutes of overtime. Senior Erick Martinez-Stucchi had six saves for Central Valley.

Pitman 2, Tracy 0: Seniors Marco Arias and Daniel Galdamez both had goals in the win for the Pride (12-8-1). It’s the second straight year the Pride have won at least one playoff game.

Div. III

Patterson 3, Ceres 0: Senior Ricardo Jimenez and sophomore Antonio Gallegos both had goals for the Tigers (14-3-2) in the win over the Bulldogs (7-7-3).

Valley 2, Oakdale 1: The Mustangs (11-6-4) gave up two second-half goals in the loss. Junior Kaleb McDonald had a goal for Oakdale.

Div. IV

Liberty Ranch 5, Sonora 2: The Wildcats (7-3-2) saw their season end with a loss to the Hawks (13-7).

Lindhurst 6, Orestimba 1: The Warriors (7-9-4) fell to the No. 1 seed Blazers (19-1).

Div. V

Hilmar 3, San Juan 0: The Yellowjackets (16-6) opened the Div. V playoffs with a shutout victory.

Escalon 2, Summerville 0: The Cougars (9-11-3) are at Hilmar on Thursday in the semifinals. Junior Christopher Borrego had a goal and sophomore Alexiz Rodriguez added a goal and an assist for the Cougars.

Linden 3, Hughson 2: The Huskies (4-13) battled back from a 3-0 first-half deficit but saw their season end.

Div. VI

Waterford 4, Delta 0: The Wildcats (17-5-3) have allowed only two goals during their six-game winning streak.

Girls Basketball

Div. I

Edison 48, Pitman 46: The Central California Athletic League champion Pride (22-7) missed a game-tying shot as time expired.

St. Mary’s 114 , Turlock 18: The Bulldogs (15-14) fell on the road to the No. 1 seeded Rams (20-4).

Div. II

Modesto Christian 70, Grant 65: Sophomore Kiara White with 23 points led the Crusaders (16-12) in their road victory. Junior Hannah Parsons and senior Nia Boston both added 12 points for Modesto Christian, which is at No. 1 Antelope (26-3) on Thursday.

Div. III

Placer 55, Patterson 49: The Tigers (15-13) played the No. 1 seeded Hillmen (25-2) tough until the very end but saw their season end.

Div. IV

Livingston 38, Sonora 27: The Wildcats (15-13) struggled to score in their loss to the Wolves (21-6). Senior Victoria Montes had nine points and 17 rebounds for the Wolves.

Ripon 58, Union Mine 45: The Indians (20-8) won their playoff opener at home. Senior Reina Sausedo led the Indians with 26 points. Junior Kiley Holland added 13 points.

Div. V

Hughson 55, Orestimba 48: Hughson (19-8) snapped Orestimba’s 12-game winning streak in an upset on the road. Orestimba ends its season with a record of 25-4.

Holt 63, Waterford 36: Waterford (15-13) trailed by 19 at halftime in its loss.

Girls Soccer

Div. V

Hilmar 2 (4), Summerville 2 (3): The Yellowjackets (16-9) advanced on penalty kicks after the game was tied at two after regulation. Senior Emily Vieira and sophomore Liliana Johnson each had goals for Hilmar.

Hilmar has won at least one playoff game in each of the last four years.

Amador 2, Escalon 1: The Cougars (8-13-2) fell in overtime.

Colfax 9, Waterford 0: The Wildcats (8-7-1) fell on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

Div. VI

Ripon Christian 4, Rio Vista 1: The No. 1 seeded Knights (18-4-2) won their eighth game in a row as junior Elle Van Wyngarden had two goals and one assist. Senior Rylie Nunes added a goal and two assists for Ripon Christian.
