Top area wrestlers to compete in Masters Meet with goal of qualifying for State
The goal for Stanislaus District wrestlers at this weekend’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet: Finish in the top six.
The top six in each division qualify for the CIF State Championships, which are Feb. 27-29 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
The Masters Meet begins Friday at the Stockton Arena and will be the first where both the boys and girls compete in the same venue.
Action begins on Friday at 9 a.m. for boys and 11 a.m. for girls. First-, third-, and fifth-place matches are scheduled to begin on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for seniors (65-up)/military, $5 for students (K-12), and free for children (age five and under). Parking is $10 per car and $25 per RV.
Boys Wrestlers to Watch: Here are the area wrestlers who are competing in the Masters and ranked in the top 12 in the state by California Wrestler: Oakdale sophomore Michael Torres (106 pounds, ranked third); Oakdale junior Brayden Abell (113, seventh); Pitman senior Izzy Tubera (120, fifth); Turlock senior William Giron (126, ninth); Oakdale junior Clayton Bashor (126, 11th); Turlock senior Adrian Heras (132, sixth); Oakdale sophomore Ceasar Garza (145, seventh); Oakdale junior Seth Borba (152, eighth); Pitman senior Kendall La Rosa (160, fifth); Pitman junior Juan Mora (220, fifth); and Pitman junior Emilio Gutierrez (285, 12th).
Large group of local girls qualify for Masters Meet: There are 24 Stanislaus Distict female wrestlers who have qualified for the meet. Three state medalists from last year will compete and they are: Turlock senior Hailey Ward (101, ranked third); Central Catholic senior Faalia Martinez (137, third); and Pitman sophomore Lilly Freitas (150, first).
