Notebook: Local volleyball all-star event Saturday in Turlock
Representing their schools for the final time, more than 40 Stanislaus District seniors will play in the second annual Stanislaus District Volleyball All-Star Event on Saturday at Pitman High School.
The event begins at 11 a.m. when the North Small-School team plays the South Small-School team. The large-school match will follow. Both will be five-set matches.
The four coaches are: Escalon’s Teresa Williamson (North Small), Enochs’s Jaclyn Hollis (North Large), Hilmar’s Patti Harris (South Small), and Central Valley’s Regina Selfridge (South Large).
Tickets are $7 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors.
Central Catholic, Escalon, and Ripon Christian all won CIF Sac-Joaquin Section titles this year and each will be represented.
Local basketball tournament begins Wednesday: The Modesto City Classic boys basketball tournament begins Wednesday at Downey and Gregori.
Games begin at 3:30 p.m. and nine local schools are participating in the event.
Here are the first-round games:
At Downey: El Capitan at Modesto (3:30 p.m), Lathrop at Lincoln (5 p.m.), Hughson at Downey (6:30 p.m.), East Union at Johansen (8 p.m.)
At Gregori: Atwater at Enochs (3:30 p.m.), Pitman at Beyer (5 p.m.), West at Davis (6:30 p.m.), Kimball at Gregori (8 p.m.).
Turlock High grad added to Pirates 40-man roster: Turlock High and Merced College alum Blake Cederlind was recently added to the Pittsburgh Pirates’ 40-man roster. Cederlind, a right-handed pitcher, had never appeared on an MLB roster before the transaction.
Pitching with Single-A Bradenton, Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis in 2019, Cederlind was 5-2 with four saves and a 2.28 earned run average. He was drafted by the Pirates in the fifth round in the 2016 MLB Draft.
Stan State women’s basketball off to strong conference start: The Stanislaus State women’s basketball team is 2-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play and the Warriors are at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Junior forward Kyanna Davis is third in the league in scoring with 17 points per game and junior center Kaleigh Taylor is fourth with 15.6 per game.
The Warriors men’s team is 5-2 and 1-1 in CCAA play and are at Cal State Monterey Bay on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Senior forward Vida Faniel leads the team with 15.1 points per game.
