‘We have built a foundation.’ Enochs softball wins first league title since 2015.
They finally got the title.
After finishing second or third in the old Modesto Metro Conference in each of the last three years to Gregori, the Enochs Eagles are a league softball champion for the first time since 2015 after a 6-1 win over Pitman on Thursday.
“It feels good to get over the hump,” Eagles coach Moises Martinez said. “We have built a foundation but we still have work to do.”
Enochs (18-4-1, 12-2 Central California Athletic League) ends the regular season with a home game against Gregori on Tuesday. The Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs begin May 13.
The two teams have split the season series.
“We want to beat them and they got us (7-4 on April 11) last time,” senior pitcher and third baseman Raquel Chaidez said. “Every year, it’s good games with them.”
After falling to the Pride (11-13, 8-6) on April 9, the Eagles rebounded in the series finale.
After two scoreless innings, the Eagles broke through with three runs in the bottom of the third highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by sophomore Chloe Wong. Chaidez added an RBI single in the next at-bat.
Wong finished the day 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Enochs would add two runs in the following inning to build a comfortable 5-0 lead.
Pitman’s only run came on an RBI single by sophomore Maddy Insell in the seventh.
Martinez, who was an assistant under Tim Williams the last time the Eagles won a league title, said the program hasn’t been under .500 in any year since the school opened in 2006.
“This program has been one of the most successful teams at the school,” he said.
