Local Digest: Cowell scores first career MLS goal, football teams schedule tough

Ceres native Cade Cowell made his professional debut on Saturday for the San Jose Earthquakes against C.F. Monterrey in an international friendly.

Cowell came on in the second half and scored his first career goal in the 61st minute in a 2-1 loss.

“I thought Tommy (Thompson) sent the ball in well and Cade made a great near-post run, something that we have been working on,” Earthquakes forward Chris Wondolowski told sjearthquakes.com after the game. “I’m so proud of him to get that. He’s going to have a bright future, he’s going to continue to grow as a player, and I’m proud of him.”

Cowell, who signed with the Earthquakes on Jan. 23, is the youngest player (15 years, 102) in club history and the fourth youngest player in Major League Soccer history.

Central Catholic and Oakdale add tough non-conference games: After Lincoln asked to be taken off the schedule, Central Catholic had an opening for Sept. 13 and over the past couple of weeks, Raiders coach Roger Canepa had been looking for a formidable opponent.

They have found one in Upland from Southern California, Canepa said on Thursday. It’ll be a two-year home-and-home.

Central Catholic will travel to face the defending CIF Southern Section Division II Champions this year before hosting them next year.

Upland is led by junior linebacker Justin Flowe, who has over 40 Division I offers and is the No. 3 ranked player in the Class of 2020 by 247sports. He had 145 tackles and 17 tackles for a loss in 2018.

Canepa said because the Raiders play the following week against Manteca in their first Valley Oak League game, he wanted to find a team that plays similarly to the Rams and the Highlanders fit.

Like its league foe, Oakdale has a tough non-conference opponent in Liberty of Brentwood, which the Mustangs will play in Week 1.

The news was first reported by MaxPreps reporter Mitch Stephens.

Liberty won the CIF State Division 1A Championship in 2018 and return quarterback Jay Butterfield (3,294 passing yards and 43 touchdowns). Butterfield has 15 offers and is a four-star prospect by 247sports.

Central Catholic alum wins national title: Menlo College sophomore Tiana Jackson won a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) title on March 16.
