Ed Sciarini: Our Constitution doesn’t restrict our rights; it restricts government
Re “It’s time for the Constitution to evolve, again” (Letters, Oct. 12), consider: Our constitution was adopted to establish the powers – and limitations – of our government, and to secure the liberty of the people. It is not a prescription to force conformity to any certain ideology. There was only one constitutional amendment that restricted the rights of the people (don’t know which amendment? Look it up), and it was in due time repealed.
Let us hope we have not reached the point where a nightmare scenario such as the writer proposes is even remotely possible.
Ed Sciarini, Modesto
