How many days has it rained in Modesto this year? There’s more to come — and soon

It’s rained 31 days out of the year in Modesto so far, and another storm is expected in the area this week.

Since Jan. 1, the Modesto Irrigation District has recorded daily rain 40% of the time. The highest rain day was Jan. 16, measuring 1.17 inches.

The rain season runs from July 1 to June 30, and the season average rainfall is 12.12 inches, according to MID, whose records date back to 1888. The record number of rain measured in a single season to date is 26.01 inches in 1983.

At this point in the season, the average rainfall is 9.98 inches, MID says. But this season has shattered that number and well exceeded the average season, with 16.81 inches so far.

The average rain total for March is 1.89 inches. This year, 2.10 inches of rain has been measured, with 12 days left in the month.

According to the National Weather Service, a weather system coming to the area Tuesday through Wednesday will bring Modesto half an inch to an inch of rain.

And after that? “We’re not expecting additional precipitation,” NWS meteorologist Idamis Del Valle-Shoemaker said. “We’re expecting dry conditions through (the rest of) the week.”

A Weather Service flood advisory for the Modesto area was in effect Sunday “until further notice” but had fallen off the seven-day forecast by Monday morning. Stanislaus County’s evacuation warnings and orders along parts of the Tuolumne and San Joaquin rivers remain in effect.

Rain numbers are collected at the MID office in downtown Modesto near L Street and 11th Street.
