National Weather Service forecasters issued a freeze warning for the Northern San Joaquin Valley from late Tuesday night through Friday morning.

Turlock Gospel Mission planned to open a warming center Tuesday for those who need shelter from the winter weather, which is forecast to reach the lowest temperatures Thursday morning.

Projected lows during the cold snap are in the mid-20s to low 30s, the weather service said. Near to below freezing temperatures are expected to last for six to eight hours in the mornings Wednesday through Friday.

The elderly and people experiencing homelessness are especially vulnerable to the freezing weather, the weather service said. The mission urges people to come to the warming center at 437 South Broadway in Turlock, Executive Director Christian Curby said in a press release. Warming center hours will be 9 p.m. to 9 a.m.

“Many people who normally stay away from shelters don’t have proper clothing for the temperatures we’re expecting and are at serious risk,” Curby said in the release. “We want them to know we are ready to help them with shelter, clothing, hot meals and other needs.”

The nonprofit plans to continue the warming center until the cold snap ends, per the release. Overflow shelter beds are available for men, women and children.

No significant rain is expected during the cold snap, but isolated thunderstorms are possible in the Northern San Joaquin Valley Tuesday afternoon. The storms may produce gusty winds, brief downpours and small accumulating hail, the weather service said.
