Stanislaus County primary election results continue to be tallied. Here's what to know
Tuesday’s primary election brought decisive results and some surprises across Stanislaus County races. Voters rejected a fire-service tax in Salida, while incumbents largely cruised toward November.
Here are key takeaways from this week’s Election Day:
- Salida voters are on their way to rejecting Measure J, with 46.2% in support and 53.8% opposed, falling short of the two-thirds majority needed to fund the Salida Fire Protection District through an annual tax that would have generated $1.9 million.
- Stanislaus County leaned Republican in the gubernatorial primary, with GOP candidate Steve Hilton capturing 34.9% of local votes compared to 27.6% statewide, while Democrat Xavier Becerra trailed at 22.6% in the county vs. 25.5% statewide. Those two candidates are on track to face off in the November election.
- Riverbank Democrat Michael Masuda advanced to the Nov. 3 general election with 23% of the primary vote and will challenge Republican incumbent Tom McClintock in California’s 5th House District. McClintock secured 63% of primary votes.
- Republican Assemblymember Juan Alanis will run unopposed on Nov. 3 for a third term representing California’s 22nd Assembly District, though his campaign still raised nearly $1 million. Top contributions came from the California Statewide Law Enforcement Association and Operating Engineers Local Union 3.
- Stanislaus County Supervisor Mani Grewal holds a commanding lead in his District 4 reelection bid with 75.8% of the vote. Challenger Jennifer “Rally” Valenzuela’s has 24.2% in partial, unofficial results. Supervisor Terry Withrow ran unopposed for a fifth term on the Board of Supervisors, which will begin in early January.
- The next results update from the Stanislaus County Registrar of Voters is scheduled for Monday, June 8, by 6 p.m.
