A dog with a soul-shattering past has been given a new lease on life in Philadelphia.

Milo, a 3-year-old terrier pit bull mix, didn’t have a good life up until someone finally started looking out for him, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said in a March 21 Facebook post.

“Milo has endured more suffering in one lifetime than anyone should. It was last September when one of our officers received a call about a dog that had been brought to an emergency vet in Lancaster County,” the shelter said.

“The sweet boy was emaciated and weak. His white fur was stained yellow and brown, likely from living in his own excrement.”

Not only was he weak, but he also lost one of his back legs.

“Heartbreakingly, we would learn that according to his owner he also had only three legs due to the owner sitting on one of them when he was a puppy and breaking it. It was amputated,” the shelter said.

While that couldn’t be helped, the shelter’s attention revolved around Milo’s weight.

“But, our concern that day was his frail body. He weighed just 26 lbs. and hadn’t gotten into this condition overnight. His owners claimed he had been vomiting, suffering from diarrhea, and losing weight – but they never sought veterinary care until that very day,” the shelter said.

“Despite the agony he had been through, Milo had been ignored by those who should have loved and cared for him. It’s hard to imagine the cruelty Milo endured at the hands of those who should have been his protectors.”

Now, Milio is safe and is on a healing journey.

“Everything changed that day. Milo was surrendered into our care and brought to our Philadelphia headquarters where this courageous pup could finally receive the care he so desperately needed—a proper diet, medications, and endless love,” the shelter said.

“We are fighting to ensure that no animal suffers the way Milo did and to hold his owners accountable for their neglect. They have been charged with two felonies and a misdemeanor for their lack of care for Milo.”

According to his pet profile, Milo is a people-loving dog and adores receiving tons of affection.
