A patient pup has finally found his own happy ending after spending many days in a Michigan shelter — 683 days, to be exact.

Yankee was a familiar face at the Saginaw County Animal Care & Control shelter for nearly two years. He had been at the facility for so long that he became a staff and volunteer favorite, WNEM reported back in January.

He was the longest resident even then.

But now, after seeing countless other wagging tails come and go, it was Yankee’s turn to say a happy goodbye to those who had been caring for him for so long.

“After 683 days of tail wags, head tilts, and hopeful glances, our longest resident, Yankee, has finally left the building … for good! Today, at our adoption event, Yankee got the send-off he truly deserved — staff and volunteers lined up to cheer him on as he trotted off to his forever home!” the shelter said in a March 15 Facebook post.

As if hearts couldn’t smile any harder, the shelter posted a video of Yankee happily walking down the facility’s hallway as staff cheered for him.

“From the moment he arrived on May 2, 2023, Yankee stole our hearts with his goofy charm and endless resilience. He patiently waited for the perfect family, and today, his wait is over!” the shelter said.

Tears (but ones filled with glee) were flowing as he enjoyed pets on the way out.

“As he hopped into his new family’s car, we couldn’t help but shed some happy tears,” the shelter added. “Yankee, we’ll miss you, but we know your best adventures are just beginning. Wishing you endless belly rubs, long naps, and all the treats you can dream of!

“Congratulations, Yankee! You did it!”
