100 pounds of stolen dynamite, other explosives found in Nevada hotel room, feds say

A California man has been indicted in connection with the discovery of 100 pounds of stolen explosive materials in a hotel room near Las Vegas, federal prosecutors say.

On Jan. 4, police found dynamite, detonating cord and boosters in a Henderson, Nevada, hotel room and vehicle, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Nevada said in a news release. The materials had been stolen from a Hawthorne, Nevada, mill on Dec. 24.

Federal prosecutors indicted the 38-year-old man accused of stealing and hiding the explosives Tuesday, Jan. 25, the release said.

He faces charges including theft of explosive material from licensee, theft of explosive material moved in interstate commerce, transport of explosives by a non-licensee, possession of stolen explosives and improper storage of explosives.

Prosecutors gave no indication of why the man stole the explosives.

He will face trial in March and could face up to 10 years in prison for each count if convicted, prosecutors said.

Henderson is 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas.
