A structure fire Monday night caused heavy damage to a townhouse in Turlock and displaced an older woman living there.

Turlock city firefighters first responded with a single engine to the 3100 block of Andre Lane for a smoke check at 10:15 p.m. But multiple reports upgraded the call to a structure fire and a request for other agencies to assist, said Capt. Jason Bernard of Turlock Fire.

Four engines from Turlock responded along with two engines and a truck from Ceres, which is overseen by the Modesto Fire Department.

The firefighters battled heavy fire and smoke in the second story and attic of the townhouse. They soon knocked down the flames and then worked for a few hours on an extensive overhaul to make sure the fire was out, Bernard said.

The resident of the home got out on her own. She chose to stay with a friend, Bernard said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
