Update: Neighbor describes hearing gunshots at scene of fatal shooting

Two people were killed in a shooting in Modesto’s airport neighborhood Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Modesto police responded at 1:22 p.m. to the 600 block of Thrasher Avenue in south Modesto on reports of multiple gunshots in the area. Officers arriving at the scene found two gunshot victims.

Police department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said both of the gunshot victims died at the scene. The shooting occurred in a residential area south of Oregon Drive.

Officers locked down some streets to secure the perimeter.

Modesto police have not released information on the identity of the victims. Investigators are looking for suspects and witnesses. Police detained one man at the scene; it was not clear if he was arrested or if he was stopped for something unrelated to the shooting.

No suspect information was available from authorities.

Roberto Alcaraz, who lives on Thrasher, said he was changing the motor oil on his car when the shooting occurred. He said he heard from eight to 10 shots fired.

Alcaraz said the shooting was about 150 feet away outside a house nearest to Oregon Park. The covered body of a victim was still lying near a church at the corner, he said.

“When I got up from behind my car, I didn’t see anything,” Alcaraz said. “I live here at my house and go to work. I don’t talk to many people.”

Modesto police said detectives and a crime scene unit are investigating the shooting.

Police are asking that anyone with information about the shooting contact Detective Josh Grant at 209-342-9104 or Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636. Those calling Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
