Turlock Unified School District seeks input on trustee boundary maps. What to know
Turlock Unified School District is considering two maps for new trustee boundaries that align with 2020 census data.
The school board heard a presentation Tuesday from Jeff Tilton, senior consultant with National Demographics Corp.
Trustee Mary Jackson said it’s important to share these maps with the public. A couple of people commented on them Tuesday.
“I’d really like to make sure we have as many people aware of what we’re doing,” Jackson said.
The board will review the maps again Jan. 4 and Jan. 18, according to the presentation. Trustees must decide by the end of February, Tilton said.
“Be grateful you’re not a county or a major city,” he said, referring to differences in the redistricting process for school districts.
The goal of redistricting is to spread Turlock’s population equally throughout the seven trustee districts. The two draft maps offered Tuesday were named orange and green, chosen randomly by the firm, Tilton said.
Both maps have population deviations under 10% to comply with equal population guidelines. The green map has one area — district seven — that is a majority-minority district, meaning people identified as Latino make up the majority.
Assistant Superintendent Barney Gordon said neither map would affect sitting board members.
Trustee Jeffrey Cortinas said the two maps look cleaner than those the board reviewed at the previous meeting. “I think either one would be a good option,” he said.
