Turlock woman ran over a man with her pickup. She's been sentenced for her crime.
A 54-year-old Turlock woman has been sentenced to five years and six months in prison for reportedly hitting a man with her pickup, driving the wheels over his body.
On Jan. 19, Anna Walker pleaded no contest to attempted voluntary manslaughter in connection with the July hit-and-run incident, the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office announced in a news release Monday afternoon.
The injured man struck by the pickup suffered severe injuries, but he was taken by ambulance for treatment at Memorial Medical Center in Modesto. He survived his injuries.
The incident occurred about 11:15 p.m. on July 29 in the 1600 block of Larkspur Place, just east of South Berkeley Avenue in Turlock.
Police officers responded to a report of an injury crash. When they arrived, they found the man with life-threatening injuries, according to Turlock police. Investigators later learned Walker was driving the pickup that struck and injured the man.
Prosecutors said Walker intentionally struck the man, who was dragged for a distance. They said the pickup's wheels rolled over his body, before Walker drove away.
Turlock police has said the man had walked in front of the pickup Walker was driving when she intentionally accelerated toward him and knocked him to the ground. Walker and the injured man were acquaintances, according to police.
The following morning, officers found Walker’s pickup parked at her house on West Glenwood Avenue, about 3 miles southwest of where the man was found injured.
Prosecutors said Walker's statement to police and evidence investigators found on her pickup connected her to the hit-and-run incident.
A few days after the incident, Turlock police detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Walker, who was taken into custody without incident.
Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Lewis prosecuted the case against Walker. Prosecutors initially charged Walker with attempted murder.
Walker's first trial began in later November, but a judge was forced to declare a mistrial because of an evidentiary issue. A second trial had been scheduled, but both sides agreed to a plea deal.
Walker agreed to plead to the less serious charge of attempted voluntary manslaughter. Shortly after she pleaded no contest to the charge, Stanislaus Superior Court Judge Shawn Bessey sentenced Walker. Prosecutors said the defendant received the maximum sentence for such a charge.
