Former Roosevelt Junior High School Principal Brian Chubon faces criminal charges in Merced County relating to an alleged inappropriate relationship with a minor prior to his employment in Modesto, the Modesto City Schools district reported.

While one alleged victim has been identified, the student was not from Modesto City Schools, according to the district.

“Families in Modesto who may have information to report should contact the Modesto Police Department at 209-552-2470,” a press release from Modesto City Schools says.

It added that MCS ran a criminal background check from the Department of Justice prior to hiring him, but the “charges against Mr. Chubon date to December 2024, which has prompted district officials to carefully review an unusual set of circumstances in this case. It appears that multiple public and investigative agencies in Merced County were aware of the charges; however, Modesto City Schools was not initially notified.”

Chubon became principal of Roosevelt in July 2025 and no longer is employed with the district. Prior to that, he was assistant principal at Mark Twain Junior High School from July 1, 2022, to July 2025.

Before his tenure with Modesto City Schools, he was principal at Gustine Unified in northwestern Merced County and a teacher in the Oakdale Joint Unified School District, according to Transparent California.

“The approach taken by agencies in Merced County appears inconsistent with the processes normally taken in these situations,” Associate Superintendent of Human Resources Mike Henderson said in the press release. “We will be requesting their cooperation to access information to determine what transpired. We are also proactively communicating with parents, staff, and the community to ensure that there is sufficient public awareness. That way, any others who may be impacted can have the opportunity to come forward.”
