An Oakdale man was arrested Wednesday after a search of his home led to the discovery of nine dead cats.

The Oakdale Police Department received a report alleging dead cats and “substandard living conditions” at a house on the 100 block of 6th Avenue, according to a news release. Police, along with Oakdale Animal services, responded to the residence where they were allowed entry by the tenant.

Officers observed “several” deceased cats, detained the tenant, and called in detectives to continue the investigation, according to the release.

With a search warrant, investigators found more dead cats throughout the home, bringing the total to nine. Investigators estimate the cats had been dead one to two weeks based on their condition.

The man, who was not named, was arrested on felony animal cruelty charges and transported to the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, though the booking log does not show him in custody as of Friday morning.

Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact the Oakdale Police Department at 209-847-2231. The investigation remains active.
