Newman man convicted of murder in 2018 stabbing of girlfriend
A 48-year-old Newman man was convicted Friday of murder with a deadly weapon for the stabbing death of his girlfriend nearly seven years ago.
Christopher Torrez was found guilty of fatally stabbing 39-year-old Sonia Gonzalez on Nov. 21, 2018, during a confrontation in their Newman home.
The incident unfolded when Torrez, in a fit of rage, struck Gonzalez in the face, causing significant swelling and a laceration on her nose. After the initial attack, Torrez went to the kitchen, grabbed a knife, and returned to the front door, where Gonzalez was attempting to escape. He stabbed her seven times.
Her screams were heard by others in the house, who rushed to help.
Newman police officers responded to the scene, where they found Gonzalez suffering from fatal stab wounds. Despite her critical injuries, Gonzalez was able to tell officers that Torrez had attacked her.
Authorities were alerted to the suspect’s fleeing vehicle, and a description was provided to officers. Shortly after, they spotted Torrez’s car nearby.
A brief pursuit ensued, during which Torrez reportedly told officers, “You’re going to have to shoot me, I’m not going back to jail.” He was apprehended moments later.
The conviction carries a sentence of life in prison, with Torrez set for sentencing on Sept. 19, 2025.
