Update: Pedestrian hit in Modesto in March dies. Driver already faces hit-and-run
A pedestrian has died several weeks after being struck by a vehicle in south Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Cheryl Spangler, 48, died from injuries suffered March 18 on South Seventh Street, said Officer Thomas Olsen in an email. A local Facebook news site said she died Saturday, May 3.
A week after the crash, the CHP arrested Magali Sevilla, 24, on a felony hit-and-run charge. She is accused of leaving the scene after striking Spangler with a 2011 Honda sport utility vehicle.
Olsen said Monday that the investigation continues and could result in another charge related to Spangler’s death. Sevilla was released on bail soon after being booked at the Stanislaus County Jail on the hit-and-run charge.
The crash was reported at about 7:20 a.m. south of Blankenburg Avenue. A CHP news release said emergency workers found Spangler lying on the west dirt shoulder of Seventh. She was taken to Doctors Medical Center for treatment of injuries that were not detailed.
The release said officers could not find Sevilla at the scene but later learned she was driving a vehicle that fled south. It did not say where she was arrested.
The scene has a mix of homes and industrial uses and is next to freight tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad.
