Two people arrested following sideshows and pursuits in Stanislaus, nearby county

Multiple law enforcement agencies responded to sideshows in the early morning hours Saturday in Stanislaus County, the sheriff’s department said.

Starting at 2:50 a.m., sheriff’s deputies and Modesto police responded to a large sideshow at West Hatch Road and Dallas Street, where vehicles took over the intersection with burnouts, car stunts and reckless driving.

A sheriff’s helicopter tracked the activity from overhead, as the sideshows moved to different locations and deputies pursued participants, the sheriff’s department reported. A group would take over an intersection and begin spinning doughnuts, and then scatter when police arrived.

Sheriff Sgt. Zeb Poust said the sideshow participants migrated into San Joaquin County to the Manteca area and Stockton, as the sheriff’s department airship continued to assist units on the ground.

According to preliminary information, other agencies including the CHP were involved with vehicle pursuits near Stockton and rural areas of San Joaquin County. At one point, a vehicle drove toward two CHP officers, Poust said, although details of that incident could not be confirmed.

Ultimately, a pursuit into the Sierra foothills ended near Jackson when CHP stopped a suspect vehicle with a spike strip. Two occupants of the car were arrested.

No additional information was available from law enforcement agencies.
