The Modesto Police Department has arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 43-year-old man on McHenry Avenue early Friday morning.

Jose Valdez, of Modesto, was identified as the victim who was pronounced dead in the parking lot of Citi Auto Sales just after midnight, according to a news release.

After interviewing witnesses and following up on leads, police identified Modesto resident Edward McCullen, also 43, as the suspected shooter.

Just before 5 p.m. Friday, the Modesto Police Department SWAT team took McCullen into custody in central Modesto. He’s booked on charges including weapons violations and homicide.

“Our team is committed to bringing justice to victims of violent crimes and providing closure to their families,” said Sgt. Sean Martin of the Violent Crimes Unit. “We are glad we were able to do this for Mr. Valdez and his family.”

The investigation remains active and anyone with information related to the case is encouraged to contact Detective Bolinger at 209-342-9162.
