Update: Modesto victim, Patterson suspect identified in Crows Landing DUI fatal crash

Roadway fatality

The Modesto motorcyclist killed Saturday night in a collision with an allegedly intoxicated driver on Crows Landing Road north of the San Joaquin River has been identified by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

The driver of a white 2005 Chevrolet Silverado pickup, Federico Avina of Patterson, was arrested and faces charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and DUI causing injury, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The rider of a red 2020 Harley-Davidson Heritage, 46-year-old Conrad Duenas of Modesto, was northbound on Crows Landing, approaching Ehrlich Road at undetermined speed around 7:55 p.m. Avina was driving southbound on Crows Landing Road, approaching the intersection at around 35 mph.

It was raining at the time of the incident.

Avina failed to yield the right of way to the motorcyclist and made a left turn from Crows Landing onto Ehrlich, the news release says. He traveled into the direct path of travel of the motorcycle.

Duenas was unable to slow in time and struck the right side of the pickup. He was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest under the Silverado. He died at the scene.

Apparently uninjured, Avina was determined to be driving while under the influence of alcohol. Saturday, the day of the crash, was his 48th birthday, according to the jail booking log.
