Man arrested in west Modesto shooting of juvenile. Here are the charges he may face

Modesto police detectives have arrested a man suspected of shooting at two juveniles, hitting one multiple times, at a west Modesto apartment complex in January.

Anthony Welch, 23, is accused in the Jan. 19 shooting at the El Casa Verde apartment complex on Robertson Road.

A 16-year-old boy suffered multiple gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening, Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said. A 15-year-old boy was also shot at but not hit.

Detectives would not say how, but they identified Welch as the suspect and on Wednesday located him near a vehicle in the 1400 block of Florida Avenue, Bear said.

When he saw officers, Welch dropped a handgun and ran but was quickly taken into custody, Bear said. It has not yet been determined whether it was the same firearm used in the Jan. 19 shooting.

Welch was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, using a gun in the commission of a crime, inflicting great bodily injury and committing the crime while out on bail for a firearm charge.

Detectives would not say whether a motive has been determined for the shooting.

A court date has not yet been set for Welch, whose bail is $700,000.
