Suspect identified in early morning west Modesto homicide

The man arrested in a fatal shooting in southwest Modesto early Thursday morning has been identified as 31-year-old Bryant White.

White was arrested on suspicion of murder and an enhancement for using a firearm in the death of Leonard Zuniga, 24, of Modesto.

The shooting occurred around 2:20 a.m. on Erie Avenue, near Robertson Road Park. Officers performed CPR on Zuniga before he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

White was located several hours later standing outside of an apartment complex about a block away from the shooting scene, said Lt. Brian Kleiber. He did not say what led detectives to White.

Detectives are trying to determine a motive and whether or not White and Zuniga knew each other, Kleiber said.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or MPD Detective Sean Martin at 209-342-6116.
