A K9 was used to apprehend an uncooperative suspect after a fatal early-morning shooting in southwest Modesto on Thursday, police report.

About 2:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of a shooting on Erie Avenue near Hammond Street, where Robertson Road Park is located, Lt. Brian Kleiber said by phone. They found a 24-year-old man suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office identified him Thursday afternoon as Leonard Zuniga of Modesto.

Officers performed CPR on Zuniga before he was taken to a hospital, where he died.

The investigation led to a suspect and his location. After the K9 was needed to take him into custody, he was medically cleared. Police are not releasing his name at this time, Sgt. Eric Schuller said Thursday morning.

The investigation remains ongoing, with witnesses still being interviewed, he said.

Anyone with information regarding the homicide is asked to contact Stanislaus Area Crime Stoppers at 209-521-4636 or MPD Detective Sean Martin at 209-342-6116.
