Man found shot to death outside a home in Newman

A man was shot to death in Newman early Thursday morning, according to police officials.

Shortly after 6 a.m., officers with the Newman Police Department were called to the area of T Street and Inyo Avenue on reports of shots fired.

When they arrived, they found a deceased male, according to Lt. Brett Short of the Newman Police Department.

It was not immediately clear if the shooting took place inside or outside a home. The victim was found outside, according to Newman Police Chief Randy Richardson.

No further information was released about the incident.

A man who was walking with a friend on Inyo near S Street, approaching the scene, told The Bee he heard four or five gunshots and then saw multiple people run onto Inyo from T Street.

Police taped off the crime scene and were interviewing residents.

Homicide detectives with the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene and were combing the property and surrounding area for evidence.

Richardson said he believed it was the first homicide in Newman this year.

The homicide comes a few days after another shooting in Newman. Shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, officers were dispatched to an address on Fig Lane, where they located a woman who’d been shot.

It was determined the shooting happened in an alley behind Auto Zone, which is at N and Inyo, about a half mile from Thursday’s fatal shooting.

Monday’s victim was the passenger in a vehicle that had entered the alley, police said on Facebook. “Unknown subjects shot at the vehicle, striking it multiple times. The victim was hit in the upper part of her body and received a shrapnel-type wound.”

The driver of the vehicle drove the victim to the Fig Lane address just outside of Newman. She was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

“Officers canvassed the area and learned that some type of gang-related altercation may have occurred just prior to the shooting,” the post said.

Richardson said Thursday that at this time, the incidents do not appear related.
